If you think campaign signs are annoying and you’re thinking about vandalizing any of them or making any disappear, you might want to think twice about it.

That’s according to Camden County Sheriff’s Sergeant Scott Hines who says doing any of the aforementioned is considered to be an unclassified misdemeanor.

“Sometimes what we so, is um…the person that has a sign on their property….maybe they didn’t have permission, uh…the person who’s doing the campaign may not have actually had permission from the property owner AND you know what? Sometimes we actually find that it is someone who’s actually stealing or defacing the sign.”

Not only can you be charged with tampering with the campaign signs but you can also be charged with trespassing.

Hines also says it’s unfortunate when sign tampering occurs in the lake area because most of the races are local involving local people.

Punishments can range from up to a year in jail and-or a $2,500 fine.
