MU Researchers Find Compound Which May Slow ALS and Dementia

Researchers at the University of Missouri have discovered a natural compound that may slow the onset of A-L-S and dementia.

The report identifies the compound as kaempferol (cam-fer-all), an antioxidant found in certain fruits and vegetables, such as kale, berries and endives that may support nerve cell health.

The catch…?

Kaempferol is not absorbed by the body very easily meaning a beneficial dose for an A-L-S patient would be 10-11 pounds of the substance every day. That puts the next challenge for researchers to encapsulate the compound with lipid-based nanoparticles that are commonly used in drug delivery within the body.

M-U researchers hope to achieve that testing by the end of the year.
