It’s an unfortunate reminder that MoDOT is sending out about the need for motorists to use extra precautions when driving through work zones.
Central District Area Engineer Danny Roeger says the latest reminder was prompted after a MoDOT flagger, 60-year-old Jay Bone of Smithton, was hit and killed last week by an 18-year-old driving a semi on route-O in Pettis County.
Roeger explains that the concept is really not a case of rocket science…“Remind folks to to put their phones down, drive the appropriate speeds and and pay attention when they’re driving through our work zones and keep our workers…keep you safe, so everybody can go home safe to their families.”
As of this week, the 18-year-old has not formally been charged in connection to the work zone death.
In addition to a criminal charge, the driver can also be hit with a $10,000 fine not to mention a likely civil lawsuit.
