Airbag Manufacture Disagrees With Requested Recall Affecting Hundreds Of Vehicles

Federal regulators and a manufacturer of airbag inflators are at odds about whether to recall 67 million devices made over the past 18 years that could be in your vehicle right now.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes the inflators pose an unreasonable risk of death or injury.

The agency says the devices can project metal fragments into drivers and passengers — rather than properly inflate the air bag.

But Tennessee-based parts maker ARC Automotive has rejected the agency’s demand that they be recalled.

GM on Friday agreed to recall almost a million of its vehicles that have the ARC inflators, but the devices are also in Chrysler, BMW, Hyundai and Kia vehicles, among others.
