So far, so good…preliminary numbers are being reported on the Camden County portion of the voter-approved 3% sales tax added on to purchases of adult-use marijuana and marijuana products throughout the county.
“The first report we got was $25,000, then it went down to $18,000, then it went back up to $22,000. We believe that’s going to stay on a fairly steady path, so it might wind up being around $260,000 in the long run by the end of the year.”
Presiding Commissioner Ike Skelton also says the issue of whether the added sales tax can be collected by both county and individual municipalities within a county is being challenged in the courtrooms.
“Half of the Tax Lawyers and what not believe that we can stack it….and the other half of the Tax Lawyers and what not believe that we can’t stack it.”
In the meantime, according to Skelton, it’ll remain business as usual with the county’s share of the taxes being earmarked to roads and bridges.
